The data swamp is sometimes called a data warehouse. Data must be queried, cleaned, transformed and then analyzed by data scientists, and only then can they begin to look for signal, which may not even be there. Every dataset contains noise; only some contain signal, and a test is required to tell the difference, such as a hypothesis test or a control chart.
