If you don’t know…

Long before George, Brad, Matt, and eight others made their Vegas heist film, Frank, Dean, and Sammy made theirs, by the same name, in 1960.

Some people think the original is a timeless classic. Others look back on it as the Rat Pack making home movies. (Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop we’re in it too.)

I’m going to go ahead and spoil the plot of this 60+ year-old film because it’s a beautiful, ironic, metaphor for manufacturing muda. Danny Ocean’s gang gets away with millions in cash but it’s unwittingly torched in a coffin. Millions of dollars, up in smoke.

Now, even before the Rat Pack was at it, Mr. Taichii Ohno was developing the Toyota Production System (TPS) and developing the taxonomy of muda, which we’ve come to know as the 7 Wastes:

1. Defects
2. Delay
3. Over-production
4. Over-processing
5. Transport
6. Inventory
7. Motion

We’ve also seen an eighth waste: under-utilized talent. We at Quality Improvement Curiosities are purists, though, and we exclude the 8th waste for two reasons:

• First and foremost, the value-added test is elegant and objective. Did the activity change the form, fit, or function of the product? If yes, you have a value-added step. Congratulations. If not, you have waste. Please refer to Taichii Ohno’s classic list for the type. 
  
  Nothing about the value-added test concerns itself with who did or did not add value. Or who came up with the idea behind recent improvements, or who was on the team, and so forth.
  
  
• Secondly, “Ohno’s Seven” rhymes with “Ocean’s Eleven.”
