Let data reign supreme!
We all know data frequently takes a back seat to anecdote, gut, executive whimsy, and so on. Shouldn’t! But it so often does. It’s the bane of the op-ex mission.
That’s why this shirt is such a perfect gift for quality improvement professionals, scientists, statisticians, data scientists, and six sigma black belts.
That! and the vintage comic book art is dead-in-your-tracks stunning.
We can’t get enough of this throwback to the 1960’s. The classic hair. The attitude in the eyes. The crossed arms. That neckerchief!
Speaking of her eyes… we bring this shirt to you in three shades of blue to make the eyes pop. The other three colors are subtle and amazing as well but the curators at QI Curiosities wear it in steel blue and aqua. The women's fashion fit version comes exclusively in Caribbean blue.
Check out the "show me your data" badge on the back. This shirt is part of our series by the same name.
Look, we all love stories. Great civilizations are built on them. The wisdom of the ages is often passed on through folklore, fables, myths, ballads. Even Einstein said, “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.”
But stories ain’t data.
Data-oriented thinkers carry with them at all times the possibility that their best data—and the insights from them—could be supplanted with better data. And we know that well-intentioned people can look at the same data and tell differing stories about it. Different hypotheses and opposing conclusions, but all of them are testable and built on data.
If your reasoning isn’t built on data, or empiricism if you like, what is its foundation? Faith? “Look, it’s turtles all the way down.” So goes the classic punchline. And sometimes standing behind your data is a tremendous act of courage.
We could ask Galileo and the Roman Catholic Inquisition about this. Maybe we don’t need to. The Inquisition declared Galileo’s heliocentrism "formally heretical” and sentenced the greatest scientist of their day to house arrest until he died.
