Art lovers love the LOVE sculpture. Robert Indiana’s most iconic work actually began as a painting on a greeting card, which he designed in 1964. It was just a personal piece he sent to friends. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) put the painting on their 1965 Christmas card.

Robert Indiana always claimed to be a Hard-Edge artist, not a Pop artist. The Tate Museum (Britain) explains, “Hard edge painting is an approach to abstract painting that became widespread in the 1960s and is characterized by areas of flat colour with sharp, clear (or ‘hard’) edges.” Mr. Indiana once said, “I still think of myself as Hard-Edge. However, people still get confused and think that I am Pop.”

Nonetheless, art critics seem to have settled on Pop art as the correct classification for the LOVE painting and the LOVE sculpture. The first sculpture was made in 1966. Copies of the sculpture can be found all over the world today. It was a huge hit.

If only data-informed decisions were as popular as Indiana’s pop art icon.
