Industrial engineers make manufacturing (and more) higher quality, more efficient, less expensive, and safer too. Industrial engineers are systems thinkers and process experts. Just one reason they make great moms. Their households operate with maximal efficiency.

Even if the mom you have in mind is leading the company—and a lot of industrial engineers do—we at QI Curiosities know that she spends a lot of time on the factory floor, learning form the frontline players where the system needs tuning.

If you don’t know, “takt” is the German word for beat, as in “keep the beat.” (Its full origin story is more colorful than that but, back tot our story...) The standard symbol for takt time is the metronome, which helps musicians maintain their tempo.

Similarly, one of an industrial engineer’s many skills (superpowers, really) is setting up systems that move product, information, or people through at a smooth, consistent speed. This prevents crowding and inventory pile-ups. Gridlock in a system is no good. In the biz, we call this “flow.”

Takt is actually the rate of customer demand, that is, how fast the end user buys from you. The factory’s production rate should match takt time or it as risk of making too much or too little product. It’s a pretty simple concept that’s difficult to apply because factories are often complicated places.

Teams all over the plant, or all over the entire value stream can’t be in constant contract, coordinating and timing their efforts, maintaining similar production rates. So the industrial engineers design systems according to takt times and build in flexibility to manage fluctuations without disruption.
