BAYESIAN STATISTICS IS SCARIER THAN HELL

Some choices are easy:
   A)  one semester of Advanced Bayesian Statistics
   B)  infinite torment at the hands of a sadistic demon

Grab this grim (but also funny) horror t-shirt for your favorite statistician or data scientist as a Halloween gift.

The design by Brazilian comic book artist, Denio Viana, shows the back of a college boy at the end of a desolate hallway offering two open doors. He has made his choice. He has opted for a grim, filthy room. The walls suggest it’s been a bloody, messy last few moments, and years.

Inside, a sinister demon in a butcher’s apron holds a long, bloody, imprecise blade. He waits for his next victim over a shiny wet surgery table. Rusty chains with meat hooks hang from the ceiling. A dumbwaiter behind him will carry vivisected parts to the depths of Hell.

Our college student has chosen this fate over a bright, clean room hosted by an attractive professor with one arm swept open as if to say, “Welcome!” Above the whiteboard is the name of the class: “Advanced Bayesian Statistics."

The boy made the right choice.

#IYKYK. If you don’t know…

Thomas Bayes developed a theory…in the form of a theorem…in the mid eighteenth century that enables statisticians to describe probability of an event based on prior knowledge about the event, or “on personal beliefs about the event.” We’re not sure what this means. Ask the statistician in your life to explain it.

Anywho—this was new. Prior to Bayes’s work, and his notably prolific follower, Pierre-Simon Laplace, statisticians were stuck with classical symmetric approach or the quasi-philosophical approach known as “frequentism,” which is equally baffling, and hence, the reasonable choice made by our college student in our fun horror t-shirt design.

Despite being developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Bayesian methods require so much computational heft, they weren’t widely embraced by the guilds of science and statistics until recently.
