If you don’t know…

Our Fairey-esque portrait is of a young Walter Shewhart, the self-taught statistician who bequeathed unto the world control charts, or more broadly, statistical process control charts. He did a lot of his work at the Western Electric Company and we still today use his “WECO Rules” for separating assignable cause variation from common cause variation.

See, when a process is “in control,” it’s behaving as we’d expect it to. That’s not to say it’s behaving well. Bad processes can be predictable too. “In control” just means no surprises. Put a little differently, the variation seen from a process that’s in control is common, that is, caused by randomness. But a process that is out of control is demonstrating assignable cause variation, which is to say, it’s behavior is unexpected.

What if you don’t actually love Walter Shewhart? What if you don’t particularly feel an unpayable debt of gratitude to the father of SPC for all the wisdom and insight he brought to industry? Well, this is still a boss look, especially on autumn. (That is, the the t-shirt color called autumn, not specifically on women named Autumn, nor is it a look designed for the season of autumn.
